Life Up Until This Point

Time: 8:26 p.m.
Place: My APT in Hampton
Song Playing: "A Song For You" Donny Hathaway

First off I gotta say this song playing is OFFICIAL!! I don't know if I'm getting on this Donny Hathaway bandwagon too late, but I'm staying on it. I used to play music, so I appreciate the song for its arrangement AND the message. But on to the purpose of this post. My close and brutally honest friend "T Dot" as she is calling herself these days sent me an e-mail today. Basically it said I'm allowed to talk about my life from time to time like I used to as opposed to the fictional characters that I've been writing about. So here's a recap. I'd go a little more in depth, but I gotta get up and go to work in 4 hours.

-It's already been a year and a few days since I graduated from Hampton University and I feel like I'm stuck in neutral. I know I have a job. I know it's in my major, but something don't feel right. I keep trying to make it out of this black hole called Virginia, but for some reason I just can't. Have I been applying myself 100% to get out of here? Nah. Could I be doing more? Possibly.

-A producer spot at my job has been open for let's say roughly the past few months. It'll be a year that I've been there June 8th. Put your hands up if you think I was SERIOUSLY considered for the job. All the folks with your hands up, put your hands down. You are not pimping. I understand the concept of bringing a person along slowly, really I do. But it's been damn near a year son. I ain't saying I'm gonna go in there all militant because that won't help my cause any. It's funny becaue when the announcement was made in our morning meeting today, I felt eyes on me. After the meeting the executive producer (the HPIC...head producer in charge) brought me to the side and talked to me. She said it wasn't like the station was looking over me. They just wanted to keep bringing me along. Her words..."You just haven't made enough mistakes yet." WHAT???!! So I get it. You WANT me to fuck up. Gotcha. Granted the producer they're bringing in has years of experience and I'm a year out of school. Granted he or she will be more knowledgable of certain things I am not YET. However, I started out there as an intern the second semester of my senior year. We'll say January. So un-officially I've been there a year and a half. I just started getting paid last June. And by paid I mean $8.50 an hour (I got a $1 raise a few weeks ago). I could make more making Fake Jordans in Cambodia.

-Also in the meeting there was another announcement that a former intern from this past semester was being brought on full-time. HUH?? Now I ain't hating cause she's a sista and I love ya'll. But I have (or I thought I had) some sort of relationship with these people. Guess this means happy-go-lucky Jarrod ain't gonna be at work. Get ready for Fuck You Pay Me Jarrod.

-On a brighter note...I'm going to my family reunion... In July... In Alabama.
Hey I gotta find something to be excited about.

Aight ya'll it's a quarter to 9. Someone's gotta run that TelePrompter from 5 to 9.
I'll holla.

My first thought was why in the world were you up so late? My second thought was that I feel you on the whole "Fuck You, Pay Me" Jarrod. Sometimes you just have to be that guy. Wish I could be more insightful, but I'm running a little low on insight these days...

2 things:

1. I'm so happy you got on the Donny bandwagon... not sure how much I contributed to that, but I'm taking partial credit.lol

2. Dont fret too much about your situation. You already know how the communication industry can be highly competitive, but if you're not satisfied, you gotta do whats right for you not just what pays the bills.

I don't have to give you the "give it all you've got lecture" because you've heard it so often from me, I'm sure you have it memorized. But, to quote something a wise person once told me: "Don't be afraid to chase your dream. The journey itself will make a great story to your kids one day."

What the station did was a bitch move, straight up. Take this experience for what it is. Don't get comfortable. Get your game up. Make moves. Don't look back.

Oh, and wear sunscreen in Alabama. You already black enough.
